Gilroy, Santa Clara County
Gilroy is named for John Gilroy, a Scottish sailor who left his ship at Monterey in 1814 and settled on a ranch here. The old city hall of 1905, with its clock tower, still stands on Monterey Street downtown. West of town, Gilroy Gardens is a small theme park built around living trees that were grafted into arches, loops and basket shapes.
